Common Foot Conditions and How to Manage Them

Updated: Jan 16

Your feet are constantly in use, and with all that pressure, it’s no surprise that they can develop a variety of skin conditions. From the painful irritation of corns to the discomfort of athlete's foot, foot health is essential for overall well-being. Understanding these conditions and knowing how to care for your feet can make all the difference. In this guide, we’ll explore some common foot issues and provide tips on how to prevent and manage them.

  1. Corns are a type of skin condition that manifests as small, hardened areas on the feet. They are typically caused by repetitive pressure or friction and tend to develop on the toes or soles of the feet. Corns can be quite uncomfortable and sensitive to pressure. However, with proper foot care, and appropriate footwear, the likelihood of developing corns can be significantly reduced.

  1. A Callus/hard skin is a localised thickening of the skin that results from repeated friction, pressure, or irritation. Typically found on the hands and feet, calluses can be both aesthetically displeasing and physically uncomfortable. Appropriate care and treatment can help to minimise the size and discomfort of calluses. Most often a Foot Health Practitioner will remove the skin through the use of a scalpel.

  1. A Verruca, commonly referred to as a plantar wart, is a type of wart that typically develops on the sole of the foot. This condition is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and be transmitted through direct contact with an infected or contaminated surface. Verrucas can cause discomfort and may necessitate medical intervention to eliminate.

  1. Athlete's Foot (Tinea Pedis)is a common fungal infection that can be easily treated with the right approach. It affects the skin on the feet, causing symptoms such as itching, burning, and flaking. However, with the use of anti-fungal medications and proper foot hygiene practices, this condition can be effectively managed.

Each condition can be managed with the right care, such as proper footwear, foot hygiene, and, in some cases, medical treatment. By understanding these common foot conditions and knowing how to address them, you can keep your feet comfortable and healthy, especially with the help of a Foot Health Practitioner.
